Tremont Hotel Verandah to be Removed – September 27, 1897

Sunnyside Hotel, Water Street, Vancouver, BC ca 1890

The Rand Brothers wrote to Council telling them the matter of removing the old verandah from Tremont Hotel {pictured above} on Carrall Street will be attended to. A $15 per year lease was granted to Mrs. Lina Marshall for a small piece of land at the south end of Stanley Park Bridge. A by-election was established for Ward 5.

The Council met on Monday September 27th 1897

Present: His Worship the Mayor and Aldermen Painter, Townley, McQueen, McPhaiden, Brown, W.S. MacDonald and D.G. McDonald. The Minutes of last meetings were read and adopted.

Communications

From H.H. Allen of Leslie’s Weekly New York asking the Mayor to confer with the commercial bodies of the City with a view of getting them to advertise their wares for outfitting gold hunters to the Klondike. Referred to Finance Committee.

From From W.D. Brydone-Jack asking for a streetlight on the corner of Westminster Ave {today’s Main Street} & Lansdowne Street {today’s 4th Avenue}. Already attended to.

From the Chief of Police reporting on the electric lights. Filed.

From A. W Ross, Secretary of the Citizens’ Celebration Committee, New Westminster, asking that Thursday the 7th prox be proclaimed a public holiday to permit the citizens of Vancouver to attend the Fair at New Westminster.

That his request be granted.

From Lieutenant Colonel Worshop thanking the Council for having watered the streets along the line of their procession.

That a special meeting of the Council be held on Friday evening next at 7.30pm to consider smelter propositions and that a general invitation be extended to all parties taking an interest in the matter to be present at the meeting.

Communications

From W.R. Carter asking that stumps be removed from his premises 8th Avenue Fairview near Bridge Street {today’s Cambie} having been placed there by the chain gang. Referred to Officer in Charge of Chain gang.

From Rand Brothers stating that the matter of removing the old verandah from Tremont Hotel {pictured above} Carrall Street would be attended to. Filed for reference.

From Brackman & Ker Milling Company asking permission to erect a shed on Lots 3 & 4, Block 14, Subdivision 196 for protection to their wagons. Referred to the Engineer to ascertain if it is in the Fire Limits or not.

From J. Mason asking that brush be cut down from vacant lots adjoining his house on Princess Street. Filed.

Dr. Underhill requested root etc be removed from Broughton Street near his new house as he wished to have his fence built. Referred to the Engineer for attention.

Resolved that the Street Railway Company be again notified by the City Clerk to ….

From the Collector of Customs asking for the return of $100 unpaid and collected in the Police Court on a Chinese smuggling case.

From the President of the YWCA asking for a grant of $300.
Referred to next year’s Council.

From the City Auditor furnishing report for August.
Filed.

From the J.R. Anderson Deputy Minister of Agriculture furnishing prospectives (sic) relating to the importation of singing birds into British Columbia.
Filed.

From D.A. Campbell and William Harris asking to purchase the timber on the Hasting Park. Resolved that the City Clerk be instructed to advertise for offers for the purchase of all cedar on Hastings Townsite and also for the balance of the timber.

Resolved that Mrs Lina Marshall wife of Robert Marshall be leased a piece of land at the south end of Stanley ..

… Park Bridge being a portion of Lot 14, Block 64, DL 185 for $15 a year. The lease to be terminable at anytime by the City giving one month’s notice and that the City Solicitor be instructed to have the lease ready for submission to the next meeting of the Finance Committee.

That the Rules be suspended to allow of the introduction of a By-Law to fix the polling place and time for holding an election in Ward 5 to fill the vacancy on the Aldermanic Board in said Ward. Carried.

The By-Law was accordingly introduced and read a first time.

That the Council go into Committee of the Whole for the consideration of the By-Law.
Carried.

Alderman D.G. McDonald was appointed Chairman.

In Committee the By-Law was considered clause by clause and reported to Council as complete.

It was then read a 3rd time on motion of Alderman D.G. McDonald, seconded by Alderman McQueen.

The Council then adjourned.
