The Council met on Monday August 5th 1895.

Present, His Worship, the Mayor, and Aldermen Shaw, Coupland, Gallagher, Queen, McPhaiden, James, Clandening, Edwin Sanders, Bethune, and Daniel G. McDonald.

The minutes of last meeting were read and adopted.

Communications

From the City Clerk stating that Messrs James Clandening, Edwin Sanders and Daniel G. McDonald had been elected for Wards 3, 4 & 5 respectively to fill the vacancies on the Aldermanic Board in said wards.

Communications

From G. W. Hobson, Secretary of the Board of Fire Underwriters stating that as the matter of cancelling the City’s insurance was for the City’s convenience the Board of Underwriters sees no reason why they should ask the head office to depart from their established rules.

Resolved that the communication be filed and that the present system of insurance remain in force.

From H. Abbott asking the Council to name a date when his assistant Mr. Townley can meet the assessors to discuss the future assessments of the railway right of way.

Resolved that the communication be referred to the assessors with instructions to meet Mr. Townley in conjunction with the City Solicitor.

From Wm Gargill re: civic insurance.

From D. C. McGregor, Ceperley Loewen & Campbell and McFarland & Mahon stating certain policies held by them on the fire halls would expire on the 8th & 16th insts.

The contract of James Windebank for street scraping was submitted and approved subject to the bondsman being found satisfactory to the City Solicitor. The bond was fixed at $5.00 and the Mayor & City Clerk authorized to sign the contract and affix the City Seal thereto.

The contract of F. Round for clearing acre in the cemetery was approved and the same authorized to be executed by the Mayor and City Clerk and the City Seal affixed thereto.

The City Solicitor submitted a draft of the agreement for the leasing of the race course at Hastings which as approved and the Mayor and City Clerk authorized to execute same and attach the City Seal thereto.

Resolved that all future contracts for clearing on the cemetery grounds have a clause therein providing for the completion of the work eight months after the execution of said contract.
