Year’s Accounts Wrapped Up – December 27, 1897

BCER offered to run a streetcar every twenty minutes if Council would allow them to run a car in charge of only one man. Proposed amendments to the Act of Incorporation of the City of Vancouver to be published in the newspaper prior to being sent to the House in Victoria. The Board of Works, the Finance Committee, and the Water and Market Committee all submitted lists of expenses to be paid.

The Council met on Monday December 27th 1897

Present: His Worship the Mayor and Aldermen Painter, McQueen, Neelands, Brown, McPhaiden, W.S. MacDonald, D.G. McDonald and Bethune.

The minutes of last meeting were read and adopted.

Communications

From the Manager of the BC Electric Co notifying the Council of the installation of the 15th new light. Filed.

From W. T. Steward, Winnipeg, asking for a letter from the Council showing that he was instrumental in securing cheap light for the City. Referred to Aldermen Brown, McPhaiden and Bethune and City Engineer to draft a reply.

From the Chief of Police reporting on the electric lights. Filed.

From the Lieutenant Governor acknowledging receipt of letter from the City Clerk re estimates for next year. Filed.

…on Broughton Street. Ward Foreman to attend to after the beginning of the new year.

From petitioners asking for sidewalking on Hastings Street east of Westminster Avenue. Recommended to the incoming Council.

Resolved that a six-foot walk be laid on Lansdowne Avenue on north side by the Ward men from Westminster Avenue and Scotia Street.

From A. A. Boak, asking for the refund of certain taxes on Lot 19, Block 271, DL 526 which they claimed to have paid before. Resolved that their request be granted.

The Light Railway & Tramway Committee met on Tuesday December 21st 1897.

Communications

From F. S. Barnard, Managing Director of the BC Electric Ry Co, asking for an extension of time to the 31st of December 1898 for the construction of their Denman Street line. Referred to next year’s Council.

From J. Buntzen, Manager BC Electric Ry Co, stating that they would operate their line on 9th Avenue from Westminster Avenue to Centre Street giving a 20 minutes service if the Council will allow them to run a car in charge of one man. Referred to the City Solicitor to reply to safeguarding the City’s interests.

That the proposed By-Law for the exemption of certain lands belonging to the CPR Co be introduced and laid on the table to be considered at an adjourned meeting of the Council to be held on Thursday next at 3pm.

Carried.

The Council then adjourned until Thursday at 3pm.
