The Council for 1896 met on Monday January 13th at 12m (sic).
Present: His Worship Mayor Henry Collins, Aldermen H.P. Shaw, Harry J. Painter, John J. Banfield, Nicolai C. Schou, Donald McPhaiden, James Clandening, William Brown, William S. MacDonald, Alex Bethune and Charles Coldwell.
After being duly sworn the Council took their seats.
Moved by Alderman Brown; Seconded by Alderman Bethune
That the Council go into Committee of the whole for the purpose of striking the standing Committees for the year. Carried.
The Mayor was appointed Chairman.
The following names were submitted as members of the Board of Works: Aldermen H.P. Shaw, Schou, McPhaiden, McDonald & Coldwell. Adopted.
The following names were submitted as members of the Finance Committee: Aldermen Banfield, Painter, Clandening, Brown & Bethune. Adopted.
The following names were submitted as members of the Health Committee: Alderman McPhaiden, Shaw, Banfield, McDonald & Bethune. Adopted.
The following names were submitted as members of the Fire & Police Committee: Alderman Coldwell, Shaw, Banfield, McPhaiden & McDonald. Adopted.
The following names were submitted as members of the Water & Market Committee: Aldermen Brown, Painter, Schou, Clandening & Bethune. Adopted.

The following names were submitted as members of the Light Railways & Tramways Committee: Aldermen Clandening, Shaw, Brown, Schou & Coldwell. Adopted.
On motion the Committee rose and reported the standing Committees as agreed to.
Moved by Alderman Clandening; Seconded by Alderman Banfield
That the report of the Committee of the whole be adopted. Carried.
Moved by Alderman Clandening; Seconded by Alderman Coldwell
That applications be called for the position of City Solicitor such applications to be received up to noon on Friday, January 17th 1896. Carried.
The Council then adjourned.
