Committees Begin the Work of 1898 – January 24, 1898

Committees reported back re Chairman elected and meeting dates established. Finance Committee had decided on suppliers to the City for Wood, Sawdust, Bread, Milk, Meat, Feed and Washing.

The Council met on Monday January 24th 1898

Present: His Worship the Mayor and Aldermen Painter, Townley, McQueen, Neelands, McGuigan, McPhaiden, Brown, Foreman, Bruce and McMorran.

Communications

From A. St. G. Hamersley, stating that he had already reported on the Thompson Brothers case. Referred to the Board of Works.

From W.S. Copeland etal, asking that a portion of English Bay Beach be cleared of rocks. Referred to the Board of Works with the recommendation that the work be carried out.

From the Chief of Police reporting on the electric lights. Filed.

From R.E. Gosnell, asking the City to purchase copies of the Provincial Annual Report. Referred to the Finance Committee.

From Thomas P. Stretch etal, asking that the sidewalk about to be built on 7th Avenue be laid on the south side. Referred to the Board of Works.

From Johnson & Burnet, asking for a share of the civic Insurance. Referred to the Finance Committee.

From W.H. Wood, Secretary of the Bicycle Club furnishing the Council with copies of the Good Roads Circulars. Filed.

From M. C. McLean asking for the use of the Market shed and a grant of $100 for the Poultry, Dog and Pet Stock Association. Referred to the Market & Finance Committees.

From S. Thompson, asking that the square at the intersection of Carrall, Water, Powell and Alexander Streets be fixed up. Referred to the Board of Works.

From R.A. Lambert inviting the Mayor and Council to pay him a visit and inspect his School of Placer Mining at 316 Water Street.
Resolved that his invitation be accepted with thanks.

Annual Report of Library Board

Alderman William Brown, Chairman of the Free Library Board submitted the Annual Report of his Board which was received and filed.

Fire and Police Committee

The Fire and Police Committee met on Thursday January 20th 1898.

Seconded by Alderman Townley
That Alderman McMorran be appointed Chairman and that the 2nd and 4th Tuesdays in each month be fixed as the regular days of meeting at 4pm.
Carried.

Health Committee

The Health Committee met on Thursday January 20th 1898.

That Alderman McGuigan be appointed Chairman and that the 1st and 3rd Wednesdays at 4pm be appointed as the regular days of meeting.

The Light Railway & Tramway Committee met on Thursday January 20th 1898.

The Finance Committee met on Friday December 31st 1897.

That Alderman McQueen be appointed Chairman and that the regular meetings be held on each Friday at 4pm.

The Board met again on Friday January 21st 1898.

Present: the full Board

Tenders for supplies for the year were received and considered. It was recommended that the following accounts be accepted:

Washing D.M. Stewart

The following were laid over for further consideration:

Burial of Pauper Dead, Coal, Green Groceries, General Groceries, Printing, Binding, Stationery, Advertising and Drugs.

The following accounts were recommended for payment:

Thomas F. McGuigan disbursements $.25

Thomas Clough express hire $6.00

F.L. Prior disbursements $2.50

R.G. Tatlow salary as Park Com. 1890-7 $8.00

A communication was received from J.C. McLagan asking the City to subscribe for a number of copies of the Klondike Edition of the World

Referred to the Chairman and Alderman Brown with power to act, the City Clerk to communicate with W. T. Cooksley, New Westminster to ascertain what he would charge for distributing copies in the east.
