Applications shall be called for the position of caretaker at the Public Cemetery, the applicant to state salary required and whether he is a man with a family.

The Council met on Monday June 25th 1888 at 7:30 P. M.

Present His Worship Mayor Oppenheimer, Aldermen Alexander, Brighouse, Coldwell, Couth, Dougall, Humphries, Lefevre, and Oppenheimer.

The Minutes of last meeting were read and adopted.

Communications

From John Boultbee on behalf of Mr. Dunlevy et al making a proposition to build Street Railways in the City of Vancouver.

From J. C. Keith presenting account for payment.

From E. Crow Baker agreeing to sell the West half of Lot 14, Block 64 to the City for $375.00.

From E. Stevenson et al praying that Hastings Street be completed between Carrall Street and Westminster Avenue. Referred to the Board of Works.

From T. K. Twigg et al praying that Pender Street be opened up from Abbott to Carrall Street. Referred to the Board of Works.

3. That Wm Hamilton be appointed Fire Engineer for the new engine at a Salary of $55.00 per month and that he be subject to the orders of Mr. A.M. Cameron, Chief Engineer, said Engineer to be employed from month to month.

4. That the Fire Inspector be authorized to purchase a pump for filling the water cart and that the lands be used to supply water for flushing the sewers under the direction of said Inspector.

We recommend that McDonald and Cameron be awarded the contract for Nelson, Smithe and Homer Streets, Hugh McDonald for Burrard Street both Sections and A McLellan Seymour Street Planking.

We beg to recommend:

1. That Burrard Street be graded full width from Hastings Street

to Robson Street and 20 feet wide from Robson Street to Beach Avenue.

2. That the City Engineer examine and report upon the following streets:
(a.) Hornby from Drake to Pacific
(b.) Westminster Av to Thirteenth Avenue
(c.) Richards Street from Georgia to Pacific
(d.) The lane petitioned for by Wm Corgill et al

3. That the Council urge upon Mr. Abbott the necessity of making the bridges on the proposed North Arm Road 18 feet wide instead of 14 feet and to use gravel in the soft places where necessary.

4. That the sidewalk along the Recreation Grounds be lifted and laid on Georgia Street from Cambie to Richards and that an 8 foot sidewalk be laid on Georgia Street from Burrard to Nicola.

5. That tenders be called for the following street improvements:-
Thurlow, Jervis and Nicola from Water to Water.
Davie, Nelson and Haro from Burrard to Nicola
Howe from Davie to Pacific
Eveleigh full length
Richards from Georgia to Pacific

6. That H. Connacher be given the contract for the completion of Quebec Street to 13th Avenue at 21 cents per lineal foot.

7. That the City Engineer be instructed to repair 7th Avenue from Westminster Avenue to Prince Edward Street and put in culverts where necessary.

8. That the City Hospital be connected with the Sewers by a six inch main and four inch connecting pipes at a cost not to exceed Sixty cents per foot.

9. That plans and specifications be called for the erection of a school house on the South Side of False Creek and an extension to the City Hall, the Board of Works to give particulars of the class of building to be erected.

10. That the teamster employed to drive the water cart be paid forty five dollars per month.

11. That applications be called for the position of caretaker at the Public Cemetery, the applicant to state salary required and whether he is a man with a family. Tenders to be addressed “Caretaker for Cemetery”.

Alderman Humphries introduced a By-Law to amend Fire Limits By-Law which was read a first time.

Motions

Moved by Alderman Lefevre seconded by Alderman Brighouse. That J. C. Keith’s account amounting to $44.82 being commission etc. for paying coupons be paid. Carried.

Moved by Alderman Brighouse seconded by Alderman Alexander. That the City purchase the west half of Lot 14, Block 64 District Lot 185 from E. Crow Baker for the sum of $375.00. Carried.

Moved by Alderman Alexander seconded by Alderman Lefevre. That His Worship the Mayor appoint a Committee of three to enter into negotiations

with Mr. Dunlevy et al for the construction of Street Railways in the City. Carried.

His Worship appointed Aldermen Coldwell, Alexander, and Lefevre.

Moved by Alderman Lefevre seconded by Alderman Dougall. That Council vote the sum of $250.00 in aid of the Vancouver Reading Rooms. Carried.
