Streetcars coming to Granville, Hastings streets, but not to Robson – March 4, 1895

The Finance Committee was authorized to arrange with D. McGillivray in regard to laying streetcar rails on Hastings and Granville Streets. Meanwhile, the Council reminded the Street Railway company that their permission to build on Robson Street had been rescinded in November 1894. B.C. Ironworks given contract to supply house numbers at $1.00 per 100 numbers or 1 cent per number. There would be no charge to citizens calling to get the numbers.

The Council met on Monday March 4th 1894.
Present – His Worship, the Mayor and Aldermen Shaw, Coupland, Queen, Gallagher, McCraney, McPhaiden, Wm Brown, Thomas, Bethune and W.P. Brown.
The Minutes of last meeting were read and adopted.

Communications

From the Manager of the Telephone Co stating that they would have their poles removed off Pender Street in front of City Hospital. Filed

From Wm Brand, Secretary of the City Band asking for a grant of $80.00 in aid of J.W. Trendell, late leader of the Band.

The Finance Committee met on Friday March 1st 1895
Present – Aldermen McCraney, Coupland, Gallagher, and Wm Brown

Resolved.
That Messrs Oppenheimer Bros & Inman and Thomson be refunded the amounts overpaid by them in D.L. 182, along the C.P.R. Right of Way, which amounts are $59.67 and $33.76 respectively but that Inman & Thomson’s claim in 184 be not entertained.

Resolved.
That J.C. Vermilyea’s claim for a refund on the taxes on his property for the 1893 be not entertained as the Committee has no power to deal with the matter.

Communications
From Stanley James, City Auditor stating that he had examined the accounts for January and found everything correct. Filed.

From G.F. Monckton, Mining Engineer suggesting

Resolved that the plan and specification for a brick oven to be put at Richards Street corner of Pender Street be approved.

Resolved that the City Engineer be authorized to appoint a foreman in each ward, the rate

of pay to be $2.00 per day with privilege to engage men when necessary.

Resolved. That the rate of pay for the men attending the scraping of crossings and street cleaning be fixed at $1.25 per day.

Resolved that 3 men independent of the above be retained for general repairs

Petitions from O. Marstrand L.J. Cady, F. Harris and W. Kerfoot for street improvements be laid over for consideration with the estimates.

Whereas the City Council passed a resolution on the 11th of May 1893 giving power to the Street railway Company to extend their line along Robson Street but as the Company did not make use of the privilege given to them the Council rescinded said resolution on the 19th day of November 1894, therefore be it resolved that the City Clerk be instructed to forward a copy of the rescinding resolution impressed with the City seal to the Street Railway Company
