Electric Lighting By-Law to Go Ahead – October 8, 1894

The By-Law $100,000 for electric lighting purposes was signed, sealed and gazetted, in spite of opposition from Davis, Marshall & MacNeill . Aldermen Bethune, Franklin, C.L. Brown, McPhaiden & McCraney  were appointed to look into reasons for the delay of construction of the Burrard Inlet & Fraser Valley Railway.  Aldermen Bethune, Shaw and Salsbury were appointed to write an address to the Governor General.

Vancouver October 8th 1894

The Council met on Monday October 8th 1894

Present – His Worship the Mayor and Aldermen Salsbury, Shaw, Queen, McDowell, McPhaiden, McCraney, Wm Brown, Franklin, C.L. Brown and Bethune.

The Minutes of last meeting were read and adopted.

Communications

From F.M. Chaldicott asking for the taxes on certain lots.

Referred to the City Solicitor

From R.G. Tatlow asking the City to appoint an arbitrator for valuing the poles etc of the Vancouver Elec Ry & Light Co.

From J.C. Rowley asking for improvements on Pacific Streets

Referred to the Board of Works

From E. Schofield, Clerk of North Vancouver asking the City to pay the road tax for their employees since 1892.

From the City Clerk of New Westminster inviting the Mayor and Council to the Fair.

From W.S. Weeks etal asking for the drainage of certain lots on Hornby Street

From the Chief of Police reporting on the electric lights. Filed.

From C. Grant; secretary of the Nationalist party, asking that the a clause be inserted in the City Charted providing for the election of Aldermen by the cumulation system.

Referred to the Charter Committee

From Davis, Marshall & MacNeill stating that if the Council persisted in treating the electric By-Law as being passed proceedings would be taken to quash it.

Present – Aldermen Salsbury, McPhaiden and Wm Brown.

Resolved.

That the City Solicitor be instructed to draw up an agreement between the C.P.R. Co and the City re the lots in front of the City Hospital on the terms arranged for the purchase of same.

Notice of Motion

Alderman McDowell gave notice that at the next regular meeting he will move for a return of the names of all regular employees of the City, salaries paid same, if married or single, if tax payers or not. Also what provision, insurance or otherwise they have secured in case of sickness or death for themselves or family.

The Council then adjourned.
