Vancouver “Has No Authority” To Pay for Officer’s Wounds Received On Duty – October 17, 1898

Police Constable McIntosh (one of the two pictured above) received a Doctor’s Bill six dollars for dressing a wound received while in the discharge of his duty. Council resolved he be informed that the City has no authority to pay this account. Resolved that the Police be required hereafter to insure against accident or death in the sum of $2000. This to take effect on the 1st of December 1898, the insurance premiums to be deducted from the salaries monthly.

Resolved that a gas jet be put in the Treasurer’s Vault for drying it out.

Plans were submitted by the BC ElectricCo for proposed Depot to be built at corner of Hastings and Carrall Streets.
Plans approved only as to the main building.

N.S. Hoffar submitted plans for proposed theatre to be built by Messrs O’Brien and Jackson on Cordova Street.
Plans passed subject to being found correct by the City Engineer.

That the City Engineer be instructed to interview the North Vancouver Council at their next meeting with regard to right of way, along the water pipe line.

The By-Law was read over clause by clause and reported to Council.

The third reading was deferred.

Notice of Motion

Alderman Bruce gave notice that at the next meeting of Council he would move that all employees of the Water Works and Board of Works be paid by an official of the Treasurer’s Staff at their respective places of employment instead of as at present where the men come to the City Hall for payment thereby losing in the vicinity of 300 hours labor.

The Council then adjourned.
