Here are some highlights from the 1899 Vancouver City Council Meeting Minutes which have now been fully transcribed.
- Request for improvements in infrastructure, (lights, sewers, sidewalks, new streets & lanes, etc.) are increasing as the City grows.
- The Vancouver Fire and Police Departments get new equipment, uniforms and more staff. New Rules & Regulations adopted for the City Hospital.
- Mr. John Joseph Blake, the compiler of the original City Charter and Vancouver’s 1st City solicitor, gets a civic funeral.
- Council receives many requests (local, Canadian and international) for leasing Deadman’s Island, and for foreshore rights along False Creek Flats & Burrard Inlet.
- Council wants to limit localities of Chinese laundries and obtain rights to Indian Reserve south of False Creek.
- Throughout all these changes, Vancouver still has cows running at large on 7th Avenue.
