Isaac Hallet new Police Magistrate at $1,500 per year – March 17, 1890

(Special Meeting) After three rounds of balloting, it was agreed that Isaac H. Hallett be appointed Police Magistrate at a Salary of $1,500.00 a year on the conditions that “he shall not begin or carry on any law practice nor enter into legal partnership but that he be allowed to hold consultations where the City is in no wise interested”.

Vancouver March 17th 1890

A Special Meeting of the Council was held on Monday March 17th 1890 at 3 P.M. to consider the
appointment of a Police Magistrate.

Present His Worship, the Mayor and the full Board of Aldermen.

Moved by Alderman Horne, seconded by Alderman Costello. That the selection of Police
Magistrate be made by ballot. Carried.

Moved by Alderman Horne, seconded by Alderman Sentell. That I. H. Hallet be appointed Police
Magistrate at a salary of $1,500.00 a year and that he be required to give up all practice &
forbidden to enter into partnership.

Vancouver March 17th 1890
A Special Meeting of the Council was held on Monday March 17th 1890 at 3 P.M. to consider the
applications for the position of Police Magistrate.

Present His Worship, the Mayor and full Board of Aldermen.

Moved by Alderman Horne, seconded by Alderman Costello.

That the Selection of Police Magistrate be made by ballot. Carried.

The Council then proceeded to a ballot and after the third round Mr. Isaac H. Hallett was found to
have a majority of the Council.

It was then moved by Alderman Howe, seconded by Alderman Sentell.

“That Isaac H. Hallett be appointed Police Magistrate at a Salary of $1,500.00 a year on the
conditions that he shall not begin or carry on any law practice nor enter into legal partnership
but that he be allowed to hold consultations where the City is in no wise interested.”

Moved in Amendment by Alderman Fox, seconded by Alderman Costello. That the Salary be fixed
at $1,200.00 a year with the same conditions attached. Amendment lost, motion carried.

The Council then adjourned.
