City debentures to be sold to finance fire engine – June 22, 1886

The photo above was taken on June 14, 1886, the day after the Great Fire. City Debentures amounting to $4,500 to be sold for 5 years at 6% interest, secured by special tax on Water Street properties. Decision to purchase “Mr. Ronald’s Fire Engine” finalized. Fire By-Law to be introduced at the next Council meeting. City Clerk authorized to contract with McDonald and Cameron for work on Water Street at a cost of $3,800, to be paid 60 days from the date of the contract.

Vancouver June 22nd, 1886

A Special Meeting of the Council was held on Tuesday June 22nd at 3 o’clock P.M.

Present His Worship the Mayor presiding Aldermen Balfour, Cordiner, Coldwell, Dunn, Humphries, Griffith, L.A. Hamilton, E.P. Hamilton and Northcott.

Minute of last meeting was read and adopted.

Moved by Alderman L.A. Hamilton seconded by Robert Balfour

That the tender of McDonald and Cameron for work on Water Street in accordance with the Specifications and plans prepared by the City Engineer be accepted for the Amount of their bid viz. $3595 and that they be allowed $205 in addition to make up for Sidewalk and Plank destroyed in the recent fire, making in all $3,800 provided the Contractors are not paid for the work or any part thereof until the expiration of sixty days from the date of the Contract and that the Mayor and City Clerk be Authorized to enter into a Contract with said Contractors and sureties forthwith.

Moved by Alderman L.A. Hamilton seconded by Alderman Northcott, that the Chairman of finance be authorized to Ascertain by Communication or

advertizement from brokers or private individuals information as to the purchase of the City Debentures Amounting to $4500 payable in 5 years at 6% interest on the security of a special rate to be laid on the Real Estate Fronting on Water Street and report at an early date to this Council.

Moved by Alderman Northcott seconded by Alderman Cordiner that Mr. Ronald’s Fire Engine be purchased on Condition that he Furnish us with 2000 feet of the Maltese Cross brand of hose with Couplings Complete at a price not exceeding 1.25 per foot and that 4 hose reels, 4 nozzles and two branches be added. Carried.

Notice of Motion

Alderman Northcott gave notice that he would introduce a Fire By-Law at the next Meeting of the Council.
