Vancouver to Acquire False Creek, Coal Harbour Waterfronts – March 27, 1899

That the City Solicitor be instructed to secure…that portion of False Creek lying to the east of Westminster Ave Bridge and Coal Harbour to the West of Stanley Park Bridge. The city also agreed to pay $2,000 to the Waterous Engineering Co for a No. 5 Champion Rock Crusher.

The Council met on Monday March 27th 1899. Present His Worship the Mayor and Aldermen Grant, Skinner, McPhaiden, Brown, Foreman, Bruce and Wood.
The Minutes of last meeting were read and adopted.

From Dr. McEwen stating that he had sent the housekeeper home as she was afflicted with mumps.

From H. Cameron of the Waterous Engine Works offering the City a

No. 5 Champion Rock Crusher for $2000 net cash.
Resolved that the offer be accepted subject to the above machine gear and plant be delivered F. O. B. and free duty on cars at Vancouver Station three weeks from date unless prevent by matters over which the Waterous Co. have no control and subject to the machine, gear and plant being complete, as advertised and passed to the satisfaction of the City Engineer or other person authorized by the Council to examine same.

A telegram dated the 23rd of March was also received stating that the crusher was being shipped the next day.
Referred to the Clerk to have the necessary Agreement drawn up.

From S. Harcus asking that the express stand be removed elsewhere from Carrall St. corner of Hastings St.

Resolved to continue the running walk.

Resolved that the City Engineer fix the grade of Davie Street at what would be necessary for Street purposes only. If the B.C. Elec Ry also require to cut any deeper for the purposes of their traffic it will be necessary for them to build a stone retaining wall where required.

From a large number of petitioners asking that the Grade of Hastings Street east be lowered by the big hill.
Laid over to be done when there is money in hand for the purpose.

From Williams and Barker re Water Course running through their Brewery premises at Seaton St.
Referred to the Engineer for attention.

Resolved that the city contribute one third of the cost of proposed wood block paving on Hasting Street from Granville to Burrard Street and that the necessary proceedings be taken to have the work done and the property benefited thereby assessed.

Resolved that the Hardware Contract for 1899 be divided between Mssrs Thos. Dunn + co and McLennan McFeely.

Resolved that the tender of McDonald Bros. for delivery of crushed rock for the current year be not accepted being to high and that the Treasurer be authorized to return their cheque.

Resolved that the City Engineer order the delivery from Mrs. A. E. E. Clark contractor 1700 yards of rock to be delivered at once.

that a notice of motion be introduced in the Council by Alderman Skinner for the raising of $10000 for street purposes.

Notice of Motion

Alderman Skinner gave notice that at the next meeting Council he would introduce a By-Law providing for the raising by debentures of the sum of $ —- for the improvement of the streets of the City.
